Of course, no one would be so foolish as to claim that this marvelous result was the actual work of the engineers unaided. These men, as a class, had actually very little to do with the discipline of the army. Their own work, often arduous in the extreme, left them little time for other duties, but by this very work of disease-preventing and health-building they prepared the way by giving the men healthy and vigorous bodies and in keeping them in this condition, for the discipline and hardship of camp life to have its full and beneficial effects and to continue to form the fighting units that later on carried the war to a successful conclusion. So, all honor to the American engineer in the war!
