The Purification of River Water.

The Purification of River Water.

A SUGGESTION.

Recent experiments tend to show that caustic lime is not only the cheapest but in many important cases the most effective and trustworthy disinfectant known. In comparing its action with that of corrosive sublimate and chloride of lime, Richard and Chantemesse have shown that it is more effective than either. Dr. Liborius of Kronstadt, Russia, in a communication to the Zeitschrift fur Hygiene, 1887, states that “An aqueous solution of caustic lime, of the strength of 0.0074 per cent of the lime, suffices in a few hours to permanently destroy the typhoid bacillus, and 0.0246 per cent suffices for the destruction of the cholera bacillus.”
