THE NEW WATERWORKS AT JACKSONVILLE.
The new waterworks system of Jacksonville, Ill., just completed by the Jacksonville waterworks company, with O. N. Gardner of Jamestown. N. Y., and Charles W. Mackey of Franklin, Pa., principal stockholders has been pronounced very satisfactory. The supply is taken from 10-inch wells connected to a syphon line of pipe which delivers the flow to a receiving basin 33 ft. deep by 25 ft. in diameter, constructed of brick. The wells were sunk by the Cook Well company of St. Louis, Mo. The conduit is made of spiral riveted pipe made by Abendroth and Root company of Newburgh, N. Y. The pumping engines are two in number of 3,000,000 gals, each and of the d’Auria type. They have a guaranteed duty of 90,000,000 foot pounds for each 1,000 pounds of dry steam furnished by the engine. Normal revolutions, 65; steam pressure at throttle, 150 pounds to the square inch and water pressure 205 pounds per square inch. The engines are fitted with an hydraulic compensator. The standpipe foundations are concrete and brick and the superstructure steel plates. It is 17 ft. in diameter and has a capacity of 100,000 gals. The steel work was done by the Erie City Iron works. The standpipe is to be used for supplying the resiuents of the high part of the city.
