THE MOTOR FIRE APPARATUS SITUATION ANALYZED

It has recently become the duty of the writer to investigate somewhat carefully the problem of "motorizing" the horse-drawn fire department of a New England city of about 75,000 inhabitants; and, as the conditions prevailing in this community are similar to those found in a great many others, it is possible that they may be of some general interest. That the provision of automobile fire apparatus to take the place of horsedrawn apparatus is a rather important branch of the commercial vehicle business becomes evident when it is realized that there is one piece of fire apparatus for each 3,000 to 5,000 inhabitants in the average city of this class. The aggregate number of pieces of apparatus in use is thus very large; and, on the whole, but slight progress has yet been made toward the supplanting of animal by mechanical power.
