THE LONG ISLAND CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT.

The Board of Fire Representatives of the first district of Long Island City, embracing Astoria and Steinway, is doing good work in a practical way for the fire companies there. The board has succeeded in pushing measures through the proper channels for securing the much-needed new wheel for the fire alarm bell, the desired Babcock fire extinguishers for “ One Truck,” and other recommendations have been made to the fire commissioners. The fire department records of Long Island City are in a badly demoralized state, no registry of membership or other information appearing on the books for a number of years back, owing, it is said, to the neglect of the city clerk ; and it is the intention of the Board of Representatives to make some urgent recommendations in this direction. The board has also appointed a sub-committee to see that the firemen in the city get the benefit of the two per cent tax on the premiums of foreign insurance companies, as provided by law. Long Island City is the largest city or town in the State where this tax is not collected.
