The fire budget would have to be nearly doubled to increase the department to 20 or 25 men and the aldermen may refuse to grant this, as they have already taken a stand against the fire commissioners’ whole policy and claim it was formed hastily and without an idea of what the city would do in case of a serious fire. The volunteer firemen have in the meantime decided to bring action against the city to recover the annual $275 allowance per company as the charter provides. The crippled condition of the department was illustrated at midnight last Saturday when a house was gutted by fire. None of the volunteers responded. A half dozen paid men grouped their teams together, left them in charge of a spectator and tried to fight the flames. The situation was so bad that the fire got well under way and is the first fire in some time to get sufficient start to do much damage. Assistant Chiefs Harry Few and Andrew Cameron, both volunteers, were dismissed by the commissioners this week because they were voluuteers. They will fight their dismissal. The aldermen last week voted to reinstate the volunteer companies and the Mayor vetoed their order.
