Your Kansas brigade had a good time at the recent firemen’s tournament. The object of the tournament was to show the Londoners how efficient the provincial brigades had become, in spite of the fact that many of them have to put their hands, for both plant and working expenses, into their own pockets instead of the pockets of the ratepayers; and a second object was to show that though the fact is recognized that our firemen, as a rule, are conspicuous for bravery in the discharge of their always difficult and dangerous duties, the fund for the maintenance of the widows and orphans of those whose lives are sacrificed, is languishing for want of public support.
