New Orleans Fire Engines Tested.

The two second-size Ahrens engines recently tested and accepted by the board of fire commissioners of New Orleans are reported as being very satisfactory. A test of throwing water vertically was given when a height of 245 feet was attained. This will be seen by the illustration of the First Presbyterian church showing a stream thrown over its steeple. 1 he nozzles used were 1⅝ and 2-inch smooth bore siamesed, and using both engines. During the capacity tests both steamers were tried separately and recorded an average discharge of 850 gal. per minute, which was above their guaranteed quantity. In this test 1 ‘4-inch smooth-bore nozzles were used on each line of hose, and it was noticeable during all the severe trials that the engines showed remarkable steadiness and smooth running qualities. John I’. AhrenSv secretary of the Ahrens company, was present and chief O’Connor, Assistant Chiefs O'Neill and Lee, Chief Mechanic Gleason, were in charge of the engines.

Among the city officials and others who witnessed the test were: Mayor Martin Behrman, Assistant City Attorney Garland Dupre, Commissioner George Smith, President Herman Miester and Commissioner L. Peterson, ot the Fire Board.
