The Fort Wayne Hotel Fire.
The Steubenville, Ohio, Gazette, in commenting upon the fatal Fort Wayne hotel fire says: “Apparently the surest way for the American people to determine whether a building is or is not a fire trap is to set fire to it. If it burns like tinder and the loss of life shows that no adequate provision had been made for the escape of the inmates, we apply to it the expressive term of firetrap. * * * It is said that all modern buildings are constructed with far greater regard to fire possibilities than those of a half, or even a quarter of a century ago. Be that as it may, it does not help matters when the old timers are ablaze, and, if the latter are condemned or pulled down, it is only the part of wisdom, for an ounce of prevention in this case is certainly worth a pound of cure.”
