THE CHICAGO STOCKYARDS.

THE CHICAGO STOCKYARDS.

During 1906 the fires in the stockyards of Chicago were so few in number and the loss so very small that the packers had begun to agitate for a reduction in insurance rates. Their insistency has just met with a backset in the shape of two fires, each of which happened on Sunday, January 20, one in the Armour, the other in the Swift plant. As the Swift plant was not insured, however, and Armour’s carried a very small insurance, any urgency of the packers in the matter will not carry much weight. In any case, they evidently do not seem to expect to be successful, and are now devoting their energies towards consolidating all the private water supplies in the yards in such a way that the high-pressure system which they have for some time talked of installing may be able to have a common source on which to draw for water in case of need.
