THE CEDAR RAPIDS FIRE SERVICE
The gross fire loss at Cedar Rapids, Ia., for the past five years, as given in fire department records, amounted to $168,186. The annual number of fires varied between 120 in 1911 and 218 in 1914 with an average loss per fire of $218. This, says a report of the Fire Prevention Committee of the National Board of Fire Underwriters on conditions in Cedar Rapids, is a low figure, and based on an average population of 34,400 the average annual number of fires per 1,000 population was 4.47, a moderate figure, and the average loss per capita was 98 cents, a low figure. The population now, says the report, is estimated to be 36,600. The city is located on both sides of Cedar River; covers an area of 12.18 square miles, about half of which is built upon.
