Tanker-Building Ban Urged

A ban on the construction of DOT 112A and 114A uninsulated pressure tank cars for railroad service has been proposed by the United States Hazardous Materials Regulations Board because of their accident record. The board proposed that construction of these models be prohibited after December 31. They can continue in service, however.

The board reported that 112A and 114A uninsulated tankers carrying liquefied compressed gases were involved in accidents that took 23 lives and injured 936 persons in the years 1969 through 1974. There were 59 tank ruptures. The more noted incidents were at Laurel, Miss.; Crescent City, Ill.; Houston; Oneonta, N.Y.; and Decatur, Ill.
