SOUTH BEND, IND. WATER REPORT.
Statistics on file in the city water department reveal the fact that each year extensions are made to the water service, and that each year more water is required to supply its demands. The year 1905 was a very busy one in the water department. Several miles of new water mains were put in; new pubic hydrants were set; and steps were taken to increase the water supply, so that it may be adequate to meet the needs of the city for many years to come. Nothing definite, however, was accomplished in this direction. During the year 1905 nearly 2,000,000,000 gallons of water were pumped, as compared with 1,497,006,928 gallons in 1904. Six miles and 3,805 feet of new water mains were put in during the year, and forty-five new public fire hydrants were set. South Bend now has a trifle more than seventynine miles of water mains and a total of 812 fire hydrants.
