"Smoky Joe" Martin Dies
Joseph Bernard Martin, former Assistant Chief of the New York Eire Department died on October 26. Chief Martin, hotter known to members of that department as “Smoky Joe,” was a veteran of thousands of fires.
Chief Martin, who was born on December 8, 1862, joined the fire department on January 18, 1884. From then on his rise was rapid. He retired from the department on November 1. 1930. In recognition of his long and conspicuous service, Fire Commissioner John J. Dorman granted him an increased pension of two-thirds of his salary.
