Smoke Inhalation Still No. 1 Killer in Nation

Residential fires plagued the nation during the first quarter of 1965, causing an unusually high number of deaths and injuries.

Smoke inhalation was the No. 1 killer, according to the International Association of Fire Chiefs. A study of newspaper reports on 471 residential fires across the country revealed 384 deaths and 420 injuries, most of which were caused hy smoke inhalation. This compares with only six deaths and 176 injuries in 66 residential fires during the same period of 1964.
