SEWERAGE
The members of the sewer committee of the board of trustees of White Plains, N. Y., are in a quandary relative to the eight-inch iron force main laid four years ago from the present pneumatic ejector chamber to the main gravity sewer-pipe, in Broadway. Several weeks ago the pneumatic ejector was ready for use, and a test was made of the iron force main, which is nearly half a mile in length, along Winchester ave. Through this iron main the sewage is to be forced by compressed air to an elevation of seventy feet above the ejector, whence it enters a main in Rroadway, and flows by gravity to the disposal works three miles away. During the test several of the iron mains gave away, and the liquid found its way through six feet of earth to the surface of Westchester ave. An examination showed that at least one of the defective iron pipes had been plugged with wood, and was broken when laid. Similar defects were observed in other mains. Rut the surprising discovery is made that the pipe is not of standard thickness, being only one quarter of an inch, whereas the Shone Pneumatic Ejector Company, of Chicago, informs the committee that the pipe should be at least one-half inch in thickness to stand properly the pressure required. It is absolutely necessary to relay the entire main, the village will be compelled to pay the bill, as a former board of trustees accepted the mains and released the contractor several years ago.
沃本,漫长而激烈的会议质量。、有限公司mmon Council was held to take action on the $30,000 sewer loan. The order was finally tabled, as has been the case at several meetings. There are two reasons for the lack of action on the sewer loan by the Common Council. One is the feeling that if a loan is raised, the Sewerage Commissioners will not employ Woburn men ; and the other is that certain Councilmen, representing outlying Wards, insist that if a sewer loan is ni ide there shall also be a loan of $5,000 for highways, this money to be spent in the wards they represent. There are enough of these Councilmen to prevent the passage of the sewer loan unless they are conceded the $5,000 for highways.
