Chief Murnane, of Fitchburg, Mass., reports 135 fires during the year; valuation of buildings, $362,161, of contents, $182,699.75; insurance on buildings, $279,938. on contents, $136,860; loss on buildings, $10,656.66, on contents, $9,061.72; insurance paid on buildings, $10,603, on contents, $8,675.72; loss in excess of insurance, $541.66. The loss last year was less than in many of the ten years preceding, though more alarms were turned in. Chief Murnane recommends the installation of additional fire alarm boxes and the equipping of the Cleghorn station with up-to date apparatus.

Chief Engineer Conway, of the Jersey City, N. J., fire department, in the twenty-ninth annual report for the year 1899, shows that the fire department responded to 582 alarms of all classes, which entailed a loss of $220,814—an average loss per alarm of $379 37, and a loss per inhabitantof $1.10, based on a population of $200,000, as estimated on January 1. The total amount of insurance paid was $178 000. The department was never in bettercondition.but has not sufficient men to cover properly a city the size of Jersey City.
