Sandusky Chief Arranges for School Lectures
Chief Curtis, of the fire department of Sandusky, Ohio, is planning to send the different heads of the department to all the public and parochial schools in the city at regular intervals throughout the year and instruct the children on how to prevent fires, and what to do in case they should encounter a blaze. It is the intention of Chief Curtis to confer with Superintendent Prout in the arrangement as to hours and necessary material to begin the work. The chief considers the various fire instructions of the children as one of the most important factors in eliminating many of the blazes caused by carelessness and ignorance. Children, he says, are at the bottom of the greatest percentage of both big and little fires. As soon as business picks up, and the regular number of men are again employed, Chief Curtis also intends to visit all of the factories and plants in the city and instruct the men in the use and care of fire extinguishers, as well as other preventive means and precautions. The hospitals are also on his schedule. The various captains of the department will assist the chief in making the rounds at the schools and a schedule has been worked out by the chief. It is planned that these visits will be made monthly at each institution and special hours arranged for each lecture.
