RIGHT WAY TO LAY OUT A DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM
The National Board of Fire Underwriters have always been ready to assist the water works superintendent in laying out a distribution system, but it is doubtful whether their assistance has always been sought. Indeed, on reviewing the history of many municipal water works one is apt to question whether the design of secondary distribution grids for industrial areas in the majority of past instances has been based upon any other foundation than mere guess work. This does not necessarily mean that such distribution grids are poorly designed or that they are inadequate. Investigations in many of the older sections of Baltimore have shown the distribution system in these areas to be adequate although actually installed years ago. Therefore, since no very serious fault may have resulted by this practice in the past it may be excused, although for a better understanding of the fundamental principles as well as for the establishment of a basic design it is well to determine upon what the design for such areas should be properly based.
