流行病的事故因粗心大意or recklessness of automobile drivers recently visited the city of Bridgeport, Conn., according to accounts in our news columns. Commenting on these recent occurrences, the Bridgeport Post says editorially.

“Irrespective of the merits of the recent jitney and fire engine crash in which fourteen were injured, and the nearcrash of the following day when jitney passengers, seeing their vehicle stalled in the path of an oncoming fire engine, and frightened into a frenzy by recollections of the previous disaster, smashed and jumped through windows and struggled wildly to escape from their perilous position, along with the most recent smash of last night when another piece of fire apparatus was struck by a private car, the time has come to demand greater caution on the city streets. The sirens of local fire apparatus are of sufficiently distinct, different and penetrating nature to be heard for blocks, giving to the careful driver ample warning of their approach. Yet it is the habit of some reckless autoists who are always in too much of a hurry to heed the demands of caution, to continue blithely on their way and to attempt to pass the danger point a few seconds ahead of the men responding to an alarm. The fire apparatus has the right of way, and the driver who ignores the rights of the case and wilfully speeds into danger, is not only risking his own neck and breaking the law, but he is also needlessly endangering the lives of others. In the answering of an alarm of fire, a matter of moments may result in tremendous consequences, and it is only through public acknowledgment of this fact that the situation can be properly met.”
