Radio Vital in Forest Fire Attack

The epidemic of forest fires in the Pacific Northwest last summer, reported to be the worst since 1961, has underlined the importance of two-way radio communications, according to William A. Baker, communications specialist at the United States Forest Service Electronics Center at Beltsville, Md.

“As many as 155 fires were kindled by a single lightning storm passing through northern Idaho,” Baker reported. Fire fighters, he added, found radio facilities “indispensable in coordinating the fire fighting, in spotting dangerous zones, and in warning fire fighters of changing weather conditions.” More than 3,000 radio units of radio communications equipment are used in Forest Service Region 1, which covers Montana and parts of Idaho.
