Pumping Stations at Charles City, Ia.
The building of two new pumping stations has been decided upon by the authorities of Charles City, Ia. City Engineer W. S. Beattie is at work on plans and work is to be commenced as soon as the City Council passes on the plans. The largest one is expected to be built just east of the city hall and this station will take care of the major portion of the cify while the other one will be erected on the site of the new artesian well, near the G. P. Smith factory. The present pumping station, which is located at one end of the Main Street bridge, is inadequate for the demands of the town and will be kept in running order only until the new ones are finished and the machinery put into operation. The motive power for both of the stations will be electricity.
A fireman of a New England city, whose salary is a little better than $1,000 a year, according to a local newspaper, owes $600, and is seeking to go into bankruptcy, so that he will not be obliged to pay his debts. He places his assets at $25, which is a little better than the previous week’s pay envelope. His creditors object to his petition, and suggest that he be dismissed from the force unless he pays 100 cents on the dollar.
