PUMPING ENGINES
In deciding the Marsh steam pump case, at Detroit, Mich., after three years litigation, Judge Swan held the Frost pump to be an infringement and granted the relief asked forby the complainant . He said in his decision that the new element which was introduced in the Marsh pump was the restricted passage, which in connection with the valve, the steam chambers at each end and the annular induction ports, performs the two fold function of admitting steam to the cylinder and of regulating and adjusting its flow to the resistance to be overcome. The latter, he said, is the meritorious feature of the Marsh valve, as it makes the motive power self-regulating and insures the pump against injurious racing. He held that Marsh was the first to utilize the retardation of the steam flow from the valve chamber to the cylinder as a means of obtaining this effect. A large amount or money is involved in the case.
