PUMPING ENGINES
The contract for one of the big pumps for the Millbury, Mass., pumping station was awarded to the Goulds Manufacturing company, of Seneca Falls, N. Y., by the Worcester Engineering company, for the Millbury Water company. The pumping apparatus complete will be the very latest, being a vertical triplex power pump made by the Goulds and driven by a steam engine. The plant at Morton, Pa., is the only one of the kind in operation anywhere. The pump has three cylinders, each with twelve inch stroke and t welve inches in diameter. The capacity of the three plungers is 1,000.000gallonsevery twenty-four hours. The pump is about eight feet high and weighs 80,000 pounds. The gearing connecting the pumps will be cast of gun metal and the driving pinion will be made of rawhide. The engine will be compound and 100-horse power. The contract for this is not yet awarded. The greater part of the pumping will be done in 10 hours each day, us the estimabsl amount of water to be used in Millbury w ill not exceed 200,000 gallons in any one day. This will require about forty horae^power, but the extra power is put. in to meet emergencies and for future possibilities. Bids are coming in for an auxiliary pump and another contract will be awarded soon. The duplex type with a capacity of 500,000 gallons a day. The engine will have no connection with one another, being set so either one will run independently in case of accident. Designs for the pumping station are drawn, but until the exaetdesigns of all the machinery to be used are known the detail plans cannot be made, as the building will be constructed in manner best to suit the pumps, engines and boilers.
The Homestead, Fa., councils have decided to put a Worthington pump in the water works costing $9,000,and arrangements were made to extend the water system.
