Protecting the Ford Motor Company from Fire
Description of Private Fire Department System which Guards the Great Establishment—Three Shifts of Thirty Men Each—Careful Inspection of Valves, Hydrants, Etc.
OF course, the Ford Motor Company has its own fire department. It is centrally located, and consists of a fully equipped Ford one-ton fire truck, a sixty gallon chemical extinguisher, pyrenes, and various other equipment including 31,600 feet of hose, 2,000 three-gallon chemical extinguishers, and 100 forty-gallon chemical tanks mounted on wheels. There are ninety experienced fire fighters in the department, divided thirty men to each of the three, eight-hour shifts. Another force of 200 men are ready for duty at an instant’s notice. For every ten men there is a captain and a lieutenant. There are 10 men on duty at all times night and day. When they respond to a fire alarm their places are filled by 10 men from among the watchmen and if. the second squad should be called there is still a third squad ready. Each of these squads are thoroughly drilled and each squad have their own officers who are all however responsible to the chief on duty. Surrounding the plant are fifty water hydrants equipped to handle two and three lines of hose, while inside the plant are nine hose houses fully equipped. Pyrenes are distributed about the plant for combatting electrical fires.
