Private Use of Fire Hydrants
The danger of the use of fire hydrants by contractors and other private individuals for obtaining water supply in the course of their building operations and for other purposes is pointed out by Chief R. O. Mesnar in a recently issued annual report of the Canton, Ohio, fire department as follows:
“I want to call your attention to what I consider an injustice. I refer to the payment of fire hydrants and installing same from a safety department fund when the service department with its sub-department, the sewer division, gets more than 90 per cent, of the use of them. Also a lot of contractors get permission to use water from these hydrants and if they do. they should be made to pay for the use of same. Contractors get permission to attach reducers onto our fire hydrants for private water consumption when they are putting up a building or doing some street or sewer work in the near vicinity. And it is entirely probable that sometimes they don’t even get this permission.
