PRESENTATION TO CHIEF O’NEILL.
The citizens of Ridgewood, N. J., are proud of their fire department, as, indeed, they have good reason to be, since under the command of Chief O’Neill, it has roved itself fit to cope with any fire that is likely to break out in that town. It follows, therefore, they are proud of its head, who has done so much to bring it up to such a high state of efficiency, and in order to prove to him and to the surrounding neighborhood the esteem and respect in which they hold him, they resolved to present him with a tangible testimonial of their appreciation of his worth.
Accordingly, the night of Tuesday, December 21, being Christmas Eve, was selected as a fitting occasion for making the presentation. The form the testimonial assumed was appropriately that of a chief’s badge. This was of extremely handsome design, wrought in heavy gold and surmounted by an eagle. In the centre is a very fine diamond.
