PLANS FOR FIRE SERVICE.
A joint committee representing the New York Board of Fire Underwriters and the New York Fire Insurance Exchange has issued a report upon the proposed plans for the high-pressure fire service to be installed. The committee, before the receipt of any data, agreed upon these broad specifications: That at least 20,000 gallons a minute, say, in twenty two-inch streams, with a nozzlepressure of seventy-five pounds, or in a larger number of smaller streams, should be deliverable about any desired block for the purpose of handling a general lire in such block; that a similar amount of water should be in reserve and deliverable for the purpose of following up a fire which might spread from a block and assume conflagration proportions, and that, to do this, no more than 200 pounds’ hydrant pressure should be necessary. After a technical discussion of the pumps, valves, intakes, signal system, etc., the report makes several recommendations regarding the form of construction for pumping stations which are calculated to reduce danger from fire to a minimum.
