Pittsburgh Fire Force Reduced

One Deputy Chief, a Battalion Chief and eight Captains of the Pittsburgh, Pa., Fire Department were recently dismissed. Deputy Chief Nicholas A. Phelan, a member of the department since 1908, was told he would be demoted to the rank of Battalion Chief, and when he refused the change of grading, was discharged.

He was dismissed some years ago because he protested regarding a speech made by a former Mayor. Mr. Phelan was reinstated more than a year ago.
