Perth Amboy Chief and Fireman Killed
Chief Rowland Jensen, of the volunteer Fire Department of Perth Amboy, N. J., and Fireman Sylvester Paylor were killed while fighting a smoky fire that started in a store occupied by F. W. Grant Company, in the heart of the business district. The fire was hard to control and Chief Jensen took a hose line followed by two firemen. They advanced slowly through the smoke. The floor vollapsed and all three were thrown forward. One fireman dangled from the hose line and was rescued, but the others perished in the flames in the basement.
Chief Jensen had been head of the department for a year and was a department member for ten years.
