Former Captain Charles D. Clifford, of the fire department of this city was among one of those who called upon Mayor-elect Low this week. Capt. Clifford, it is said, is a candidate for appointment as fire commissioner, and, on the occasion of his interview with Mr. Low, is reported to have presented him with an application containing many signatures. Besides J R, Sheffield and former Capt. Clifford, the following are now mentioned for the office of fire commissioner: Henry D. Purroy, Thomas Sturgis, William Cullen Bryant, and Lieutenant-Colonel N. B. Thurston of the Twenty-second Regiment.
