Pennsylvania Cities Get Two-Platoon System

Provisions for the two-platoon system for firemen to be put into effect on January 1, 1920, are made in a bill which has just been passed by the Pennsylvania State Senate. The bill is an amendment to the Vare bill which provided for the two-platoon system in the first and second class cities of the state. Philadelphia now has the two-platoon system, while Wilkes-Barre is to put it into effect this month. Although not provided for by state law, the Wilkes-Barre officials granted the request of the fire fighters, who threatened to quit unless the two-platoon system was installed. The State Firemen’s Association, headed by Judge Eugene C. Bonniwell of Philadelphia, took an active interest in the bill and it was through the efforts of that organization that the amended bill was put before the Senate. The firemen of the state are united in their demand for the double platoon system. Under the terms of the bill the firemen would have one daylight shift of two weeks with ten hours for a day, whHe the next two weeks would be a night shift with fourteen hours.
