Oxygen-Enriched Atmospheres
Reports of fires and explosions involving oxygen-enriched atmospheres are becoming more alarming with the increased use of oxygen in our modern technologies. Recent fire experiences in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration program have recorded numerous large-loss fires, including two fatal fires in which two airmen and three astronauts died in oxygenenriched atmospheres.
有been recent oxygen explosions involving portable oxygen resuscitators at the Kennedy Space Center, Fla.; Paterson, N.J.; and Mercer Hospital, Trenton, N.J. An oxygenenriched atmosphere is any atmosphere in which the concentration of oxygen exceeds 21 percent by volume or the partial pressure of oxygen exceeds 160 torr (millimeters of mercury).
