ORIGIN AND CAREER OP THE DEPARTMENT.
We regret the want of space to give a more extended account of tho early history of the Old Volunteer Department, as it affords a very wide and interesting field of research. Its history is one of strango features and wonderful events. From its incipient stages to its present comparatively perfect condition it is filled with alterations and changes that might be safely depended upon as indicating the successive periods of our advancement as a city. For just in proportion as the department has been improved and made efficient in its legitimate work, has there been a decided progress in other things. Among all the departments of our city , none has involved in its history so many individuals of all classes and conditions. To single out the most prominent and important of these and show their relation to this department would by itself furnish material onough to fill the pages of this paper many times. It would be highly interesting, too, to sketch the circumstances which give rise to some of the principal events which mark the history of the old department—snch as the changes which have taken place from time to time in its internal arrangement, its attitude toward the city government, and its identification with the politics and social life of New York.
