Ogdensburg Has a Big Fire.
Ogdensburg, N. Y., received a severe blow when the Newell Block in that city was recently destroyed by fire, causing a loss of about $160.000. How the fire started has not been ascertained. The fire is believed to have started where plumbers had been working on steam heaters in the basement, running up the elevator shaft and enveloping the building in less than half an hour. The Hannan Tobacco block, adjoining, was damaged by water and smoke.
In writing of the fire. Chief Dooly says that the Newell Block covered a space of 82 feet front by 70 feet deep, was two stories high and 4.5 years old. It was constructed of both brick and wood, the outside walls being brick and the interior partitions of wood. The fire was discovered at 1 :25 a. m., by a passing citizen. and it was then burning on the second floor in the rear, having started from the fireplace. An alarm was sent in from box 12 on the electric system, and was responded to by two steamers, one ladder truck, two chemicals and three hose wagons. When the firemen arrived onehalf of the second story was on fire. Two thousand five hundred feet of cotton rubber-lined hose was laid, and with seven 4 and 6-inch hydrants in the immediate vicinity, two engine streams and four hydrant streams were maintained until the flames were under control. The street at this point is 80 feet wide and carries a 10-inch water main, the pressure being 55 pounds most of the time. Although twenty people were employed in the building, there were no special equipment or any private fire protection whatever. The building is valued at $27,000 and the contents at $100,000. The loss on the former was about $25,000, and on the contents, $90,000.
