Officer Killed by Fall at Drill Tower
Captain John J. McCarthy, of Engine Company No. 4, Hartford. Conn., Fire Department, was instantly killed when he fell ninety feet from the top of the department’s new steel drill tower on Huy'shope Avenue. With three members of his company, he was going through a drill when sudden pressure in a roof line caused the hose to get out of control. Captain McCarthy lost his balance and fell to the ground.
Upon arrival at Hartford Hospital he was pronounced dead, but death was believed to have occurred when he fell at the tower. Chief John C. Moran was an eye-witness to the tragedy and immediately notified all members of the Fire Commission.
