该法案允许西方韦伯斯特消防部门to disburse $900,000 in donations was formally signed into law by President Barack Obama Friday, reports The Democrat & Chronicle.
The department was inundated with donations after the ambush on Lake Road last Christmas Eve, but it could not pass that money along to the families of the two deceased firefighters without paying a hefty tax bill.
The bill grants the department a waiver to distribute the money it has already received. It now has 30 days to hand it out.
“In the true spirit of Christmas giving, President Obama’s signature on this critical legislation means that the victims and families of the West Webster Fire Department tragedy will, at long last, receive the donations intended for them,” Schumer and Slaughter wrote in a joint statement.
“We are heartened that the generosity of neighbors, friends and strangers alike will bring some measure of support and relief to the families of our finest heroes this holiday season.”
