(John O.Chief Taber’s excellence of judgment as a fire fighter was shown when he ordered three engine companies working inside the building to back out their lines, and a short time afterwards the roof and two upper floors fell in, crashing through to the third story and carrying tons of debris down to the place where the men had been working. The apparatus in service consisted of 16 engines, including 15 steamers and one motor pumper. 15 hose wagons, four aerial ladder trucks, one city service truck, three water towers (only one used); two Chemicals, four fuel wagons and four protective department automobiles. The department laid 10,300 feet of 2 1/2 and 3-inch hose. Range of nozzles in use was from 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 inches with a 2-inch stream from water tower. Damage amounted to between $50,000 and $60,000, according to an estimate by fire department officials. The building, which was of second class joisted brick construction, was owned by Harvard University, and was in a very congested and dangerous section ot the north end district. The fire originated on the fourth floor from an unknown cause. When the men of engines 4, 26 and 50, and ladder 1 had been ordered to the street after fighting the fire at close range with lines taken over the stairways, a battery of Eastman deluge sets was operated from an adjacent roof. Twelve and sixteen-inch water mains were available and the pressure at the hydrants was good. Fourteen mobile streams, two deck pipes, one water tower, and four deluge sets were used in fighting the fire, and a detail of firemen was left at the ruins all day Sunday with hydrant lines.
