The widow and children of fallen Flanders (NJ) Assistant ChiefTom Shieldshave been denied survivors benefits for more than three years, according to news reports.
A report on NJ.com (http://bit.ly/1wTZgjO) told how Shields died on May 31, 2011 after responding to Mountainview Elementary School on a report that a child was suffering from heat exhaustion (the child recovered). Shields subsequently died from an apparent heart attack, and the fire company says hisdeath came in the line of duty.
The township’s workers’ compensation carrier, Health-Lynx, however, reportedly says that it’s not responsible for paying out survivor benefits to Shield’s wife, Nicole, and his children.
Last week, localfirefightersrallied at the Mount Olive town council meeting in support of Shields’s survivors.
