Nearly 16,000 cubic yards of rank mud, besides the other debris, were dug out—a filthy mass, whose removal from a sanitary standpoint, was worth all the expense of the improvement. The new basin has a level bottom of gravel, sand, and clayey soil, and its slopes are paved throughout with clean granite blocks laid by hand, on edge, on a backing of clean gravel, and rammed to a firm position. The total area of this paving is 3.905 square yards. The storage capacity of this new basin, when full, is 4,665,(XX) gallons, and of this quantity four-fifths may be regarded as potable water at all times. The high water arja is 75.647 square feet, or very nearly one and three-quarter acres ; the area of the bottom is 469.055 square feet.or one and one eighth acre ; the depth of water when the basin is full is ten feet. The storage capacity of the Moulton b.sin is 15,195,000 gallons ; its average depth when full, is five feet, the high water area about one eighth of an acre.

The Bartlett springs source was also deepened and protected by the building of a stone well six feet in diameter and topped with brick. From this well a six-inch cast iron pipe was laid on a true grade to a similar well near the upper end of the main basin. In the sand underlying the swamp a line of main pipes with open joints was laid nearly parallel to this pipe and surrounded with screened granite to collect and convey ground and filtered water from the brook beyond the Bartlett spring to the well into which the pipe from that spring discharges. From this well an iron pipe with three outlets runs through to well No. 4, into which one outlet discharges; another discharges into Moulton basin ; the third into the main basin— the valve being so arranged that the spring water may be turned into either of these receptacles and the piping, to that No. 4 well may be replenished from the main or the Moulton basin. From the bottom of the 1 tter is laid a low level pipe into the main basin, both to provide an alternating flow and to drain the Moulton basin, when required. A new frame gate house, ten eet by seven feet, six inches inside the sub-story has also been built and lined with twelve-inch brick work laid in Portland cement. Internally this sub-story isdivided into two parts, with two sets of adjustable upper screening arrangements. Into this gatehouse the water is admitted through two fourteen inch single gate valves on the inner end, operated by extension rod with standard and hand-wheel; the former being provided with an indicator showing the amount of water admitted at different portions of the valve. The lower inlet pipe is one foot above the bottom of the basin; the upper, four feet below high water mark. A fourteen-inch cast iron suction pipe withdraws the water from this gatehouse, which has entered through the fine copper screens already mentioned. Into this gatehouse also is conducted the overflow of water from wells Nos. 1, 2, and 3—entering the screen well through a ten-inch cast iron pipe. In time water will be received by gravity from the Jackman springs through a pipe line from the Jackman brook along the bank of the river and in front of the pumping station to the gatehouse, to which also have been laid suction pipes and likewise to each well, or to a point as near as possible to each well —the old eight-inch suction pipes having been removed and replaced by twelve-inch pipes and gates. A proper waste pipe controled by a tight gate has also been laid from the new basin to the river, with provision for automatic overflow, so arranged as to keep out river water at times of extreme high water in the river. In the new connections are set Standard I.udlow valves of the double disk pattern at such points as to make possible the drawing of water by either pumping engine, singly or in combination, from the wells or gatehouse, either singly or together. Each well can be shut off from the combination without intefering with the pumping of water from the other three, and wells Nos. 1 and 2 together and wells Nos. 3 and 4 together can be shut off from the system of piping, in each case, by the closing of one valve. These connections have all proven a success.
