New York Retired Firemen Called Back to Service

Approximately 200 calls were sent out by Fire Commissioner Drennan, of New York City, to retired members of the department to appear at fire headquarters on August 7, and very nearly that number responded. The object of the call was to enlist the men, all of whom were on pension, in the active service of the department, the idea being to put the retired men on at night, and thus relieve the overtaxed regular forces, and assist the department in the present emergency of the shortage of men. The men were told that after the war when the drafted firemen had returned to duty, those who volunteered for the duration or the war would be honored with * gold button and certificate testifying to their services. They were also told that if they refused to volunteer and it could be proved that they were physically able to do so Commissioner Drennan would order them before the Board of Fire Surgeons and order their induction into active service. Chief Kenlon was very emphatic in the latter statement. Commissioner Drennan, Chief Kcnlon, Deputy Commissioner Joseph, and Deputy Chief Kuss went to Jamaica on the same night, and addressed the retired men of that district with the view of inducing them to rejoin the fire forces.
