新型的汽油发动机。

沃特斯引擎运作公司,圣保罗,Minn., pioneer builders of gasoline fire engines, who have now so many of their wellknown New Century gasoline fire engines in service, has designed and placed on the market a new type of gasoline fire engine, which is fitted with a powerful 4-cylinder, 4-cycle motor, such as is used on the highest grade of automobiles. With this type of motor, not only is the power of the engine and, consequently, the capacity of the pump largely increased, but, also, there is eliminated the vibration unavoidable with a high-speed singlecylinder engine. The ignition apparatus consists of storage battery and magneto, each, of course, independent of the other and provided with separate spark-plugs and wiring. A double set of dry cells is furnished, in place of the storage battery, if desired. The pumps are of either rotary or piston type, as preferred, and constructed to handle a large amount of water with the least possible fric tion-loss. They will maintain both pressure and delivery during a long, continuous run. A powerful friction clutch is provided between the engine and pump, so that the engine can be started independently of the pump. While the manufacturers had in view mainly the production of a light, yet powerful fire engine, ample attention has been paid to symmetrical proportions and finish. The two views of this engine shown will give a correct idea of its general construction. The pump and engine are so hung on frame that the centre of gravity is verv low. It is extremely simple in construction; all unnecessary parts have been dispensed with; and it can be operated by any of one of ordinary intelligence. So far as the question of economy is concerned, there can be no doubt that this engine meets all the requirements of the service at the minimum expense, and a little consideration of the subject will prove to any one acquainted with fire-department maintenance and equipment that the gasoline fire engine is in a class by itself and much easier to maintain than other makes. The engine cylinders are watercooled, the supply being piped from the main pumo. The pump is fitted with an ingenious heating device, whereby the exhaust-gases from the engine are utilised to heat it, thus preventing its freezing, even in the coldest weather. Thse engines have been operated for hours at a time, with the temperature ranging from 10 to 40 below zero, without any trouble or delay. The wheels used are the Archibald patent fire apparatus wheels. The suction-hose is of the best quality of smooth bore, made especially for fire-engine service. The springs are made from the best oil-tempered spring steel, and the axles and frames are of forged steel, and, the engine is constructed throughout in the best possible manner of the best materials. While this new type of engine is bound to become deservedly popular, the manufacturers will still continue to build their single-cylinder engine, of which type so many hundred are in service, giving such excellent satisfaction wherever it is used and possessing merit peculiar to itself. Besides the illustrations of the engine a test of the water-throwing capacity of one of these engine recently delivered to Ebensburg, Pa., is shown. At this rest, as will be seen, four fine streams were thrown at the same time. The engine is built in various sizes from 200 to 800-gal. capacity per minute and suitable for either the smallest village or metropolitan city. Hand or horsedraught or both can be supplied, as well as selfpropelled machines. The manufacturers will answer any inquiries from the department or municipal officials and furnish them with further particulars of the Waterous product.
