New Pumper for Manitowoc

Performing perfectly in tests to which it was submitted, the new pumper of Manitowoc, Wis., is declared by Chief Kratz and city officials and by officials of the Wisconsin Inspection bureau, to be entirely satisfactory and to meet all the promises made for it. “The pumper is all that we could hope for, and is an important addition to the equipment of the department,” said Chief Kratz. Four tests were conducted under direction of J. W. Howard, delivery engineer of the American-LaFrance Company, builders of the new pumper, a triple combination with capacity of 500 gallons per minute. The tests were made at the Northwestern slip and were divided into one twohour run and two one-half hour tests. In the two-hour test the pumper delivered 500 gallons of water per minute at 120 pounds pressure, drafting from eight feet of water. Two 200-ft. lines of two and a half inch with nozzles of one and a half inch were used, and the average nozzle pressure was 74.5 pounds pressure. The pumper delivered 574 gallons per minute under 120 pounds pressure. In the second test, lasting thirty minutes, 250 gallons per minute were pumped at 200 pounds pressure, and 92 pounds at nozzle were delivered in a 750-ft. fine of hose. The delivery was increased to 283 pounds per minute. The third test developed 166 gallons per minute under pressure of 250 pounds. Another test made for a short period to show what the pumper would do showed a delivery of 674 gallons of water per minute with an average of 74 pounds nozzle pressure with a l 5/8-inch nozzle for two 100-ft. lines of 2 1/2-inch hose. The new pumper will be stationed at the North Side station and a crew of four men will be assigned to it.
