New Position for Woman Fire Inspector

Mrs. Sarah W. Christopher, who was forced out of the New York fire department several months ago by a new civil service rule, has, as she says, “created a new job for herself since she was crowded out of the regular professions.” She has been engaged by the Cotton Garment Workers’ Association as a fire inspector at $1,500 a year, $300 more than she received in the department. Her duties will be somewhat similar, as she will be required to instruct girl garment workers in fire drills, inspect factories and keep abreast of new fire laws.

A speaker at a recent meeting called to consider the subject of fire prevention wound up his address by telling his audience that “all fires at the start arc one size, and that thousands of dollars are yearly spent to extinguish flames, but very little is expended to prevent them from breaking out.”
