New L. A. County Station
The dedication of Los Angeles County Station 9 in the racially mixed Firestone section of the South Central area was a community celebration. The station, which replaced an antique structure, is near the center of what was the curfew area during the Watts riots in 1965.
As an example of community involvement, plastic helmets were passed out to 400 youngsters and refreshments were served by a committee of local women. The women baked cakes and cookies, and a local dairy provided gallons of punch free of charge. Chief Keith E. Klinger and County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn presided at the dedication, which included demonstrations by a snorkel and ladder company and a fly-over by LACFD’s 10-place helicopter.
