The direct issue in the matter of a suit in Chancery that has been brought by Jersey City against the Jersey City Water company is the purification of the Rockaway river, the source of the city’s water supply. The water company intends to put on the stand men who experimented on effecting that purification by chlorine. Many witnesses will be examined on both sides. An endeavor will be made during the hearing to determine how much it will cost to purify the river. When the court has handed down a decision on cost the company will either do the work itself or deduct the awarded price from what Jersey City will pay for its waterworks.

The Arlington Board of Trade has commended the town council of Kearny for refusing to extend the contract with the Suburban Water company and for assuming that the Pennsylvania Railroad company’s meadow shops would be a customer, so that the water company might bring suit to make the railway dicontinue receiving its water from Jersey City. Public opinion in Arlington seems divided on the matter; but it is said the Suburban, or its parent, the East Jersey Water company, have a number of stockholders in this town.
