NEW JERSEY FIRE NOTES.

Correspondence of FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING.

General Bird W. Spencer, of Passaic, who at thirty consecutive conventions has been elected president of the association, makes a first-rate chairman and, judging from his popularity, bids fair to he re-elected year after year till he resigns or dies。 "I should like to know how and where the money paid to the bureau goes (he said ) and why an individual should he taxed $1 annually for selling kerosene oil, especially as the taxes regularly assessed against business men are increased from year to year.”—The city is preparing to buy hose and other appliancs for the extinguishment of tires in the public schools. At Morristown it is a finable offence, dating hack to the old days of leathern hose, to drive lire apparatus or vehicles over hose. The foreman of the Humane company was ordered at the recent tire in the Chronicle building to lay another line and he directed his driver to drive the wagon down the street and over a line of hose laid previously. Alderman Owens, who is also a lire warden, threatened to arrest the driver, hut upon being assured that he, was acting under orders of Acting Chief Cobbett let the matter drop for the time being. Chief Runyon, on going into office, promulgated an order that the apparatus could be driven over hose on going to a lire, but must not in returning. It was finally d cided that apparatus can he driven over hose only on the order of the chief in command.— llackettstown is deservedly congratulating itself upon the re-election for the seventeenth time of Chief George J. Kveritt as tinacnal secretary of the State Firemen’s Relief association. During all these years his election has been unanimous, and there has never been a whisper of opposition JIe is a most enthusiastic volunteer fireman atm lias served in the Cataract hose company No. 1 (of which he was an organiser and charter member) since December 3, 1877. At the first election of officers he was made assistant foreman of that company, lie was. also, the first secretary of the llackettstown Firemen’s Relief association. organised in May, 1878. In 1884 he was the foreman of the local department, serving for three years. In April, 1891, sc was appointed chief engineer, serving one term. At the twenty first anniversary of Cataract hose company in 11)02 Chief Kveritt was chosen as historian and compiled a most complete history of the company, covering the quarter century. At the recent Firemen’s Day celebration he was the collector and treasurer of the general committee, and added materially by untiring efforts to the grand success of the event. Through his long term of office he is probably the most widely known member of the New Jersey State Firemen's Relief association. John P. Reardon, George H. Danlev and Charles L. H. Apgar have been chosen respectively as president, secretary and foreman of the Flemington hook and ladder comnany.—On the night of September 24 the Red Bank firemen had their accustomed annual parade and inspection. The department consists of five companies The annual dinner of the Bayonne Kxempt Firemen's association was this year, if possible, a greater success than ever. It was held at Gus Master's casino, with Alexander Christie as toastmaster. The firemen, as well as the citizens are hoping for the speedy appointment of fire commissioners
