Bayonne is having a combination chemical hose wagon built by the Tea Tray company of Newark.
Irvington has had a destructive fire that taxed the local fire department to the utmost. The blaze, whose origin is unknown, started about 9 o’clock p. m. in one of the three icehouses owned by M. S. Drake. The building was empty at the time, and when the fire was discovered it had made great headway, necessitating a second alarm. A large brick color factory and the other two icehouses adjoining were in danger, and, as there was no hope of saving the building first attacked, the firemen devoted all their energies to saving these. Five streams were thrown on the brick structure, which was burning fiercely on the upper floors. The flames communicated to the other icehouses, and several times the soarks were blown on to the dwellings in Drake’s lane, setting the roofs afire. Chief Groom and his men shifted operations and saved these structures. A strong northwest wind was blowing and the firefighters had their hands full for about an hour, when the blaze was got under control. The firemen were afterwards deservedly complimented on their good work.
