An interesting account of the new fire engine tested in New Haven July 29 on the old Gieen before the commissioners and a large crowd of people, is given in a local paper. The engine is an “American,” built by the American Fire Engine Company of Seneca Falls, N. Y. It is of modern style, with an eight-inch stroke piston, and pumps of four and three-quarter inches, and has a guaranteed capacity of 700 gallons of water per minute. The dome is of nickle, with Russia iron jacket and nickle trimmings. The wheels are known as the ‘New Haven,” and are built by the New Haven Wheel Company. The boiler has a patent copper coil within, which was made by the National Pipe Bending Company. The running parts are done off in red and gold with pleasing effect. The test was made under the personal supervision of Herman H. Wefel. jr., the vicepresident of the company, assisted by Charles Wessel. an engineer from the factory, who had charge of the steamer during the exhibit’on. The engine was started at thirty-five pounds of steam on the first test, which consisted of throwing a stream through a one and one-quarter-inch nozzle attached to 500 feet of hose. With 100 pounds of steam the water pressure was 170. At no it was 220; at 120 it was 260; and at 95 it registered 200. The steamer reached 217 feet, seven inches along the Green. The second test was with two lines of hose, each 500 feet long, through one and one-eight inch nozzles With 120 pounds of steam the water pressure was 240, at no it was 200. The two powerful streams reached 240 feet. For the third test the two lines were reduced to 250 feet with one and one-quarter-inch nozzles. With steam at 117 the water pressure was 145; at 122 it was 150, at 130 it was 175; at 98 it was 140; and at 105 it WAS 160. The water reached 227 feet, eight inches from the nozzles. The fourth test was with two lines of 150 feet siamesed into one with one and one-hal(-inch nozzle. The monster streams of water reached a distance of 259 feet, nine inches with a steam pressure at 115, water 160, steam 122. water 205, steam 120, water 200, steam 105, water 190, steam 95. water 180 The next test was with two lines of 250 feet each, with one and one-quarter-inch nozzles. The streams were a distance of 116 feet from the ground, The last test was through two lines of 100 feet each, siamesed into four lines of fifty feet each with four pipes with seven-eight-inch nozzles. The streams reached 193 feet seven inches. The tests proved very satisfactory to the fire commissioners, who unanimously voted to accept the machine.
