FAIRFIELD, IA., is near the centre of Jefferson county, and has a population of about 4000. Our correspondent writes : “The city is lighted by the Brush electric light system from six lamps 180 feet high on a tubular iron tower in the centre of the public square. The plant is owned and operated by the city, and is run in connection with the water-works machinery. In addition to the water supply from wells the city has a system of water-works, supplied from an artificial reservoir of 100,000,000 gallons capacity, about a mile from the public square, and has a water-shed of several hundred acres of land. The water is pumped into a stand-pipe, and from there conducted through several miles of mains into the different parts of the city, supplying almost the entire city with fire protection and water for general use. The fire company consists of twenty-six members ; three hose carts, 2000 feet of hose, two extension ladders. J. S. Beck is chief, and J. W. Starr, foreman. The city has twenty-two miles of sidewalks, but our sewerage system is not very complete. We are only in debt for the new water-works, for which we pay a rental of $4022 per year and interest on bonds, $1275. The city officers are : J. M. Hinkle. Mayor; George I). Clarke, treasurer ; T. F. iligley, clerk ; H. C. Raney, solicitor; Willis Strong, street commissioner; Van M. Thomas, marshal; A. G. Ward, health officer.”
